Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship, in it's simplest terms, can be defines as "someone who uses the internet". By this definition, I am a digital citizen, and you, the reader are also a digital citizen. Neat, right?

The issue with this arises in how we teach students to become a digital citizen. As Michelle Ciccone points out in this article - http://bit.ly/3Fa8sHZ , digital citizenship is just a simplistic lists of what to do, and what not to do that has way too much focus on etiquette.

Don't get me wrong, teaching etiquette is important when it comes to teaching how to act in social settings (social media included), but I believe that in order to teach young learners to be great and effective digital citizens, we must move beyond the simplistic idea of morality based citizenship. Instead lets focus on an ecological one and teach early and frequently how the online landscape is constantly changing. Teaching this as the basis of digital citizenship
is paramount for our students to become the best online citizens possible.
